Who?.. What?.. Wool?

Almost everyone has owned a wool product in their lifetime, whether it was a clothing item, a blanket, carpet, or bedding -- the list is endless. We all have wrapped warm scarves around our necks in the winter or covered up with a wool blanket in front of the fireplace. But did you know wool can also help you beat the summer heat? The amazing fiber that is wool is full of hidden secrets and characteristics that most of us don’t know about. But fear not! The team at OMI is here to help you understand and appreciate this wonder material a little better. As many in our loyal OMI family of customers know, wool is a powerful flame retardant.  It helps us insure that you and your family are sleeping safe and sound at night by creating a flame barrier in the quilting on all of our mattresses. The wool is compressed down to 5/8 of an inch, and is then quilted into the cover fabric and securely sewn all the way around. This not only allows us to avoid using chemical flame retardants, but also allows our mattresses to pass federal flammability standards with flying colors. With the wool surrounding each OMI mattresses you also get the added benefit of it helping to regulate your body temperature. Wool has the natural ability to help you sleep warmer in the wintertime and cooler in the summer while wicking away moisture. What about wool’s carbon footprint? It’s biodegradable, as well as a natural resource that is renewable. That means it’s automatically replaced by natural processes and replenished with the passage of time. Renewable resources are part of our natural environment and form our ecosystem, which means it actually helps our ecosystem, not damage it like plastic or “poly” types of materials that can’t break down or be renewed. It is also very important to know that wool is derived from a beautiful, living, breathing animal. Please make sure any wool products you purchase are made with American Humane Certified wool. American Humane protects farm animals by working with producers through the groundbreaking American Humane Certified™ farm animal program (formerly known as the Free Farmed program). American Humane Certified guarantees consumers that the products they select are from animals that were raised and treated humanely. The beautiful sheep that produce the wool for OMI live happy, pesticide-free lives and graze freely on organic land. They are never mishandled, and are not stressed by “mulesing” or constant shearing. In simple words, they live happy lives, eating California grass and getting a haircut every so often. I could go on and on about the wonders of wool, the list is seemingly endless. My main point is this: discover the benefits of wool and allow it to help you steer away from products that are harmful to you and your family. Let it soften hard places and keep you warm at night, but most of all, let it help you rest a little easier every time you lay down your head to sleep.
